Taiko drums, flutes, shamisen, and singingLet’s plant straw mats together! Since the Jomon period (before rice cultivation), Makomo (Zizania) has been used for food, shelter, clothing, roofing, and other purposes. The Izumo Taisha Shrine holds a straw matsuri every June, and straw mats are still used as Shimenawa rope at shrines with long histories. The use of straw mats has been attracting attention again as they have been found to be useful in purifying water quality in lakes and marshes.
