Since the Jomon period (before rice cultivation), Makomo (Zizania) has been used for food, shelter, clothing, roofing, and other purposes. The Izumo Taisha Shrine holds a straw matsuri every June, and straw mats are still used as Shimenawa rope at shrines with long histories.
