#50 SDGs Action Workshop – Sake Rice Harvesting and Straw Collecting

Help harvest and dry rice in the nature-rich OZO!
See the traditional Japanese culture of making Komodaru (straw barrels) and try Straw Weaving!

A komodaru is a sake barrel filled with sake and wrapped with straw rope. The straw and rope used in a komodaru are made from rice straw, a byproduct of rice production. Rice straw has been used in a cyclical manner as living tools such as straw mats and ropes, fuel, livestock feed, construction material, and fertilizer, forming a “straw culture”. In recent years, as rice harvesting has become mechanized, rice straw has been shredded and the amount of straw used to support the straw culture has decreased.

P&N’s partner, Kishimoto Kichiji Shoten, has been harvesting rice for the sake rice Yamada Nishiki by hand to preserve the traditional Amagasaki industry of “straw barrels,” which has continued since the Edo period. After the activity, there will be time to experience straw weaving and observe the making of a straw barrel. Please come and experience traditional Japanese culture. We look forward to your participation. [SDGs No.2, 4, 6, 11, 12, 15, 17]
